A short list of five habitats does little justice to the diverse terrain available to outdoor enthusiasts. However, these five represent common areas where most American hunters will roam.<\/p>\n

Although North America does not have as many forested acres as it used to, there are still plenty of dense woods found from one coast to the other. According to World Population Review, Maine is the most forested state in the country; roughly 89% of the state\u2019s land is covered in forests. This comes as little surprise, but it may surprise you to see New York listed in the top 10. The Empire State, commonly associated with the concrete jungle, has forests covering 63% of the land.<\/p>\n
People hunting in densely forested grounds rarely take shots over 150 yards; because of obstacles and limited visibility, most shots are within 100 yards. Long-range capability is less of a concern; what\u2019s more important is a rifle that has a shorter, more maneuverable barrel. Short-action rifle cartridges and lever-action rifles, loaded with heavy bullets, are popular in these areas.<\/p>\n

In the northeast corner, the Driftless Zone is defined by hills, while the southeast has the gorgeous Loess Hills.<\/p>\n So even if you live in a \u201cflat state,\u201d you may still need a cartridge that works best for hills. Usually the shot distance will be moderate and you\u2019ll likely have room to pivot, so a round that can reach out to 300 or 400 yards will do the trick. Many believe that Kansas is the flattest state in the union, but, according to a study conducted by University of Kansas geographers, Kansas is not in the top 10 of all flattest states. This study, which analyzed the elevation between the highest and lowest points of the states, found that Florida was the flattest. Another study looked at the percentage of \u201cflat land\u201d and found that Florida was the flattest with Illinois coming in at #2. (In this survey, Kansas was in the top 10, but still not the flattest.)<\/p>\n Regardless, if you are hunting a flatter area of the country, especially if the land is uninterrupted by trees, you may have to take longer shots for deer. Accuracy and straight trajectories become important, but you also need something that can deliver ample power at 300 or 400 yards. After a harvest, there is an open area with unpicked crops that can become a meal for hungry fall deer looking to fatten up before winter. It\u2019s no coincidence that some of the best deer hunting is in high-agricultural states.<\/p>\n Many of the same issues seen in flat land and prairie landscapes impact hunters in agriculture fields. Empty bean and corn fields give hunters the chance to survey the land for hundreds of yards, but placing a shot from one edge of a field to another can be troublesome.
