More Details About Our 500 Rounds of 55gr Ballistic Tip .223 Ammo by Federal
Federal Premium’s Tactical TRU line of ammunition is optimized for law enforcement applications, but that same reliable and effective performance also makes this American-made 223 Rem ammo a natural choice for home defense with an AR-style rifle. Alternatively, this ammunition would put down any varmint or predator you could possibly track down!
This cartridge’s 55 grain polymer tipped bullet is actually Nosler’s fine work. The Ballistic Tip’s accuracy is excellent thanks to its low-drag tip and thick jacketed boat tail base. By our math, the 0.272 G1 BC bullet ought to exhibit a trajectory which peaks out at 2.15” when it’s destined for a 200-yard target, and it retains enough kinetic energy for defensive applications well beyond 500 yards. (Our math assumes you’re using the 24” barrel the bullet would require to achieve a muzzle velocity of 3,220 fps.)
The Ballistic Tip’s terminal performance is particularly well suited for home defense because it reduces the risk of over-penetration. When it hits bare ballistic gel, its tip and contoured copper jacket force the Ballistic Tip to essentially self-destruct. Under that circumstance the bullet only retains about 10% of its total weight and penetrates to a depth of about 11.5” – and instead of expanding in the traditional sense, it tears itself into five or so jagged pieces of shrapnel. The Ballistic Tip exhibits similar terminal ballistics if the ballistic gel is shielded by multiple layers of clothing.
Federal loads these high-quality cartridges with reloadable brass cases, clean-burning powder and sealed Boxer primers. You get 25 boxes when you treat yourself to the whole case!
