There are many pro’s to using a .40 S&W. It has almost identical accuracy, drift, and drop to the 9mm, but it has significantly greater energy than the smaller cartridge. It has less recoil than its parent cartridge, the 10mm, and, according to studies, is capable of creating hydrostatic shock when loaded with good JHP rounds. Hydrostatic shock has to do with what happens when a projectile penetrates living tissue; it refers to the incapacitating power that leads to neural damage and total incapacitation more quickly than with blood loss alone. In fact, studies have shown rounds like the .40 S&W are more capable of producing that effect than larger ones like the .45 ACP.
These are JHP – jacketed hollow point – rounds, and they’re made with self-defense in mind. The hollow points provide rapid energy transfer and mushroom on impact and the hard metal jacket gives the round extra strength. Protecting yourself, your loved ones, and your friends, is an issue that must be taken with the utmost seriousness, and these rounds are more than capable. They’re capable of producing a devastating wound track and, as the study above mentioned, they’re also capable of producing hydrostatic shock.
You get 1,000 defense rounds in this box of ammunition, so you can practice. Defense rounds behave differently than target rounds, and you need a significant number of them to become accustomed to their recoil. These are fairly heavy 180 grain rounds, and they have a muzzle velocity of 1,010 feet per second and a muzzle energy of 408 foot-pounds. If you want to conceal carry with the type of rounds recommended by experts Marshall and Sanow, these JHP rounds fit their guidelines.
