If you have an AR-15 or other 5.56 NATO-chambered rifle, you’re not alone. It’s become the rifle everyone wants to have – and the rifle a certain crowd loves to hate – and what’s not to love? They’re versatile, lightweight, and magazine-fed, and have been manufactured in quite a few versions including a number of semi-auto and selective-fire styles. One little-known fact about AR’s is their name; they’re regularly referred to as assault rifles, but their famous initials actually come from their original manufacturer. Armalite made the first AR-15 in 1958, bringing about the name “Armalite Rifle” or “AR.” That’s right, there’s a story behind the AR nickname, and it doesn’t begin with “assault.”
5.56x45mm NATO is a higher pressure round and can penetrate at greater depths than other rifle cartridges such as 7.62 rounds. In fact, the US Military began using 5.56 NATO in response to issues of control, trajectory, and speed. These hot rounds deliver all that and more. They’re FMJ rounds, so they’re great for target practice, tactical training, and plinking. They also have a boat tail, which helps them resist cross-winds, improving their trajectory and ballistic coefficiency. At 55 grain they’re lightweight rounds and have fantastic speed with a muzzle velocity of 3,240 feet per second. And they have knockdown power to spare with a muzzle energy of 1,282 foot-pounds.
This ammunition is manufactured by Federal, a company founded in 1922 by Charles Horn in Anoka, Minnesota, and built on a dedication to stringent standards and excellent quality. Federal was awarded an Army-Navy “E” for excellence as a result of their war effort contributions, and that same intense desire to meet their customer’s needs remains to this day. There are 400 rounds in this box of ammunition, and your rifle is going to love these rounds. And not only are they American-made, but they have fresh brass, boxer-primed cases, so you can collect your spent brass and reload.
