Shotgun shells have quite a history. In the 1800’s they were made of brass similar to rifle rounds and had card wads made from materials such as felt, leather, cork, and paperboard. In order to seal over the top overshot wad, waterglass was commonly used; no roll or fold crimp was used on those early shotgun shells. Around 1877 paper hulls began replacing the brass, and paper remained the standard until the 1960’s. But even when plastic did replace paper it took twenty years to become the standard hull material. Today shotgun shells have plastic hulls with brass bases and come with a variety of wadding and powders.
