More Details About This Wolf 62gr HP .223 Ammo

.223 Remington rounds have identical external dimensions to 5.56 NATO cartridges, but that’s where the similarities end. They have two important differences: varying pressures and chamber shapes. .223 Remington isn’t loaded to as high a pressure as 5.56 NATO is, and the 5.56 NATO chamber is designed to accommodate a longer, heavier bullet. Due to these variations, it is possible to fire a .223 Remington round in a 5.56 NATO chambered firearm, but it isn’t wise to attempt the reverse. The .223 is a common round and is typically used in one of two types of rifles: semi-auto’s such as AR-15’s, and varmint rifles, which are usually bolt action.

These are 62 grain rounds, so they’re medium weight for the caliber. They’re still light enough to have fantastic speed; they have a muzzle velocity of 3,149 feet per second. And they’re .223 rounds, so you know they’re going to hit hard. As HP rounds they’re great for hunting or self-defense because they mushroom on impact and are powerful enough to create a devastating wound track. Making a clean kill is important in hunting, and when it comes to self-defense it’s wise to use ammunition that decelerates quickly rather than over-penetrating like FMJ rounds do. Of course, HP rounds can also be used for training purposes, and, in fact, it’s a good idea to practice with the same type of ammunition you’re going to use to hunt or defend yourself with.

Wolf is a company under the umbrella of the historically significant Tula Arms Plant in Tula, Russia. They’ve been in business since 1712, and they produce all their ammunition to SAAMI or CIP standards. These particular rounds are made with steel cases using their careful copper-and-steel layering technique, making them more affordable. They also use a polymer coating to enable these rounds to feed and eject dependably. And whether you’re already a high-volume shooter or want to be, the 1,000 rounds in this box will get you well on your way.

(This ammunition is steel-cased. Some ranges do not allow rounds with steel cases, so make sure you double check before trying to use this ammunition at your area range.)
