In only seven decades, Hornady grew from little more than a man with a dream and a war surplus transfer press to one of America’s leading bullet and loaded ammunition manufacturers. The Super Shock Tip (SST) is one of Hornady’s preeminent hunting bullets. Available in a variety of calibers and weights and often featured in Hornady’s factory loaded ammo, an SST is able to quickly and humanely anchor game ranging from prairie dogs to African buffalo.

Why Use Ammo Loaded With Hornady SST?

The SST delivers the accurate ballistic performance that a hunting bullet must to reliably find its target. The bullet features a secant ogive profile, a streamlined geometry that measurably lowers drag to increase the SST’s velocity and available energy to transfer downrange. The bullet’s ballistic coefficient is further amplified by its boat tail, a tapered base that better immunizes the SST against the influence of cross and vertical winds.

Like any other jacketed Hornady bullet, the SST offers a uniformly distributed lead core and gilding metal jacket with virtually zero deviation in concentricity. Why does that physics stuff matter? Well, those features keep the SST balanced in flight as it keeps a steady course toward your trophy.

Terminal Expansion

The SST’s profile is streamlined even further by its sharp, centered, and symmetrical red polymer tip. The tip sits on the rim of the SST’s jacket and extends downward into a precision formed cavity within its core. Upon impact the SST’s tip wedges into the core to commence virtually instantaneous yet uniform, controlled expansion.

The SST includes two features that help it avoid fragmenting during terminal penetration, preserving the weight it needs to yield a deep wound cavity in addition to a wide one. The SST’s toothed mid-body cannelure tightly binds its jacket to its core, and additionally serves to keep a cartridge’s crimp secure until it is fired. The SST also includes Hornady’s patented InterLock ring, essentially a protrusion of the jacket into the core that roots the two even more firmly together. Because of these features an SST is able to stay intact even as it tunnels through game at exceptionally high velocities.

A Stellar Reputation Among Hunters

With its great accuracy, ability to expand rapidly within its target, and tendency to hold together as it does so, the SST rightly deserves its reputation as a superlative hunting bullet. And with popular loads available including 308 Win, 270 Win, and 6.5 Creedmoor, anyone can take advantage of the SST’s powerful performance no matter what they’re hunting for.
