If you’re a duck hunter don’t wait until the day you head out hunting to fire your shotgun. Getting practice in advance is key to successful hunting, and there’s more than one way to practice. Sure, you can hit the range and spend time drilling stationary targets, and target practice absolutely has its place. Shooting clays is a good way to practice with movement and also gives you a chance to practice mounting your shotgun to your shoulder. But if you want realism ahead of duck season, try doves. Doves beat their wings similarly to ducks, and you’re going to get lots of trigger time on a dove hunt. However you do it, get some practice in and you’ll get more ducks when the time comes.
Another must for duck hunting – or any waterfowl – is steel shot. Lead shot is banned in the majority of areas because if can create toxicity in the water, and even in areas where it isn’t banned it’s not a good idea to use it. The problem with steel shot is it’s lighter weight and tends not to do as well long-range, and it also doesn’t typically hit as hard. Federal addresses that problem with their Black Cloud line which is specially designed steel shot. For almost 100 years now Federal has been coming up with innovative ways to design ammunition, and these shotgun shells are a great example of why they’re a leader in the industry.
These Black Cloud rounds are 12 gauge with a 1 ½ ounce load. 1 ½ ounces is a sizable load and will produce compelling force and amazing power. Each shell is 3 ½” long and filled with #2 steel shot. These rounds feature Federal’s special Flite Control wad, which produces tighter patterns, and their Flite Stopper steel shot for a truly lethal effect. There are 25 rounds in this single box of ammunition, which is made at Federal’s plant in Anoka, Minnesota. If you hunt waterfowl, you have to try these shotgun shells, no question about it.
