More Details About Our 5 Rounds of 1 ounce Rifled Slug 12ga Ammo by Hornady
You only need three things to hunt deer: a 12 Gauge smoothbore shotgun, a box of Hornady American Whitetail rifled slug ammunition, and deer!
This shell is loaded with a one-ounce Foster slug – i.e. a rifled slug, with shallow ribs on its exterior that minimize friction on the bore and enable safe passage through a choke tube. The hollow in the slug’s base shifts the slug’s center of mass toward its front to promote greater in-flight stability. Remember: a rifled slug for a smoothbore, a sabot slug for a rifled bore!
The slug sits atop a plastic wad, which has an accordion-like design that allows it to compress during ignition. This helps to soften recoil while simultaneously creating a tight seal against the bore to promote faster velocity and more consistent ballistic performance.
Hornady recorded this slug’s 1,600 feet per second muzzle velocity with a 24” test barrel. The projectile’s 0.072 G1 ballistic coefficient means that it should stay supersonic until 67 yards and retain the minimum 1,000 ft lbs of kinetic energy advised for hunting whitetail until 96 yards. The slug’s tough lead-alloy composition equips it to penetrate deeply whilst its hollow point nose cavity produces devastating terminal expansion.
