- Q & A
One of the most common issues for dove hunters – especially new ones – is having the incorrect patterning for the sport. You want the proper, tight pattern for the tennis-ball-sized dove, not the bigger one that works on birds like ducks. Test your spread by mounting a 4-foot-square piece of cardboard on a target stand and covering it with paper. Standing at the same distance you would for dove hunting – usually between 20 and 40 yards – fire at least 5 patterns from the same distance with the same choke and load, using fresh paper each time. Then tie a 15-inch string to a marker, place the end of the string at the center of each pattern, and drawn a 30-inch circle around the pattern. The densest area should be in the middle. In order to hit a tiny dove you need around 225 to 250 pellets, minimum, in that 30-inch circle. If you’re not getting that, try more choke, and if that fails try a heavier load or smaller shot.
These shells are made by Rio, a plant in Northern Spain with more than a century in business. Since 1896, Rio has been using rigorous testing and strict quality control to make ammunition shooters can rely on. Not only do they believe in the importance of quality, they believe in safety. The Rio plant is located deep in the woods in an attempt to keep the explosives a safe distance from the local populace, and the nearest village, Galdacano, is some distance away. The plant is so isolated it isn’t unusual to see deer and other game grazing nearby. Although their main plant and headquarters are located in Spain, they do have a facility in Houston, Texas, for distribution in the U.S.
These are 12 gauge shells with a 1 1/16 ounce load. Their load gives them more stopping power for game than a smaller 1 ounce load without the recoil found in a 1 1/8 load, and they also have greater speed than the 1 1/18 loads. #7 ½ shot is great for birds such as doves, pigeons, woodcocks, and quail. It’s also good for shooting trap and sporting clays. There are 250 shells in this single box of ammunition. With that many shells you can get some serious training time in, which will improve your season if you hunt and your scores if you shoot trap or sporting clays. Get your box right away and prepare for a better hunting season than ever before.
