M193 and M855. Those are the two most popular types of 5.56x45 ammo for target practice. M193 is vanilla: 55 grain full metal jacket with a copper shell and lead core. M855 is … well, chocolate, we guess: 62 grain full metal jacket with a copper shell and lead core, plus a 7 grain steel tip.
The M855 bullet’s steel tip does more than simply attract a magnet. It fortifies the bullet to give it an easier time passing through sheet metal and other barriers. It also allows the bullet to split apart into two pieces upon striking soft tissue.
This round’s slightly heavier bullet and 3,060 fps muzzle velocity give it a higher G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.345. In more practical terms, that means you can zero in at 200 yards and expect around -7.5” drop at 300 yards; -22.8” drop at 400 yards; -49.4” drop at 500 yards.
