An SS109 round is essentially identical to an M855 – it just doesn’t have green paint on its bullet’s tip. As such this cartridge’s 62 grain FMJ features a partial steel core, so it’s hard enough to penetrate sheet metal and other barriers that might have presented a challenge to traditional lead core projectiles.

This ammo’s heavier bullets are best stabilized by a barrel with a 1:9 or 1:8 twist, although you can certainly make do with a 1:7 twist so long as you’re not stretching the limits of your rifle’s range. Don’t fire SS109 bullets at steel targets – that will damage the targets, as well as pose a risk of dangerous ricochets.
