No one is born accurate. It takes practice to learn how to send a 308 Win bullet wherever you want it to go – and the right bullet certainly doesn’t hurt, either.

Hornady loaded this American Gunner series cartridge with precisely the right kind of bullet: the hollow point boat tail, which may not pierce the air quite as efficiently as a polymer-tipped alternative, but which has proven to get the job done for at least 100 years.

This round’s bullet weighs 155 grains. That’s not as heavy as 308 Win bullets come, but still capable of acquiring 0.405 G1 BC out of Hornady’s own 24” test barrel. If you center up 1.5” and aim to 200 yards, then you can anticipate drop of nearly -9.0” at 300 yards.

The HPBT is certainly a good selection for varmint hunting, but not larger game. Though it may strike with tremendous force, the thin-jacketed and non-expanding HPBT just can’t inflict the deep and wide wound channel one would want for taking whitetail, etc. At the end of the day, the HPBT’s sole talent is precision.
