- Q & A
.17 HMR was designed in 2002 by Hornady to be a varmint round. It was made specifically to move faster, travel at a more balanced trajectory, and go farther than its closest competitor, the .22LR. Its parent cartridge is actually the .22 WMR and although there is some debate over it, there is no denying its speed and ballistics. .17 HMR travels on average a couple hundred feet per second faster than .22 WMR and does indeed have a flatter trajectory. Because it’s faster the odds of ricochet at shorter ranges are less than .22 WMR as well. It’s favored by many varmint hunters and is, frankly, an awesome little round.
These particular .17 HMR rounds are manufactured by Federal. They weigh in at 17 grain which is incredibly lightweight but the standard weight for this cartridge size. Being so light is what enables it to zip down-range at impressive velocities and also keeps felt recoil to a minimum. These rounds feature Hornady’s V-MAX bullets which expand on impact to create a fantastic wound cavity. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 2550 feet per second and muzzle energy of 245 foot-pounds. This ammunition is designed for hunting varmints such as coyotes and foxes but can also be used for target practice.
When you order this box of ammunition you get 50 rounds. This box is a great size for stashing in your range bag or pack when you’re headed out to call coyotes. With 50 rounds you can zero your optics, which should always be done with the same ammunition you intend to hunt with, and get a few practice shots in before heading out to hunt varmints. With one box you can have a great time, so just think what you could do with more than one box. Federal manufactures ammunition at their longtime factory in Anoka, Minnesota, according to high standards. If you rely on your .17 HMR to take down coyotes and other varmints, you want reliable ammunition, and that means Federal.
