- Q & A
The .22 Winchester Magnum Rifle (WMR) was designed in 1959 by Winchester. It’s sometimes referred to as the .22 Magnum or .22 Mag and should not be confused with the .22LR. These cartridges are capable of achieving 1” MOA which is why many shooters prefer it over the .17 HMR. It’s popular for hunting game such as coyotes and foxes thanks to its speed and weight; despite its smaller size when compared to the truly large rifle cartridges it hits hard and fast. As with all hunting, shot placement is key, and taking down smaller predators with .22WMR is not only possible but rewarding.
These particular .22WMR rounds are manufactured by Federal. They weigh in at 40 grain, making them the standard and original size for this cartridge although some heavier loads do exist. Being lighter weight enables them to travel towards targets at greater speeds and keeps felt recoil down. These are JHP, Jacketed Hollow Point, rounds and begin to expand immediately upon impact. Thanks to their jackets expansion is controlled, slowing it to allow greater penetration and a more devastating wound cavity. This ammunition is great for hunting smaller predators such as coyotes and foxes.
There are 50 rounds in this single box of ammunition from Federal. That’s just enough to zero your optics and take down some coyotes, so you might want to consider buying more than one box. Each of these rounds leaves your barrel at a muzzle velocity of 1530 feet per second and muzzle energy of 260 foot-pounds. Federal manufactures ammunition at their longtime factory in Anoka, Minnesota. Place your order now and do your part to reduce the coyote population in your area. What are you waiting for? Get to calling coyotes, and take them down with American-made .22WMR.
