- Q & A
.223 Remington ammo has been popular round ever since the AR-15 first hit the market. One of the greatest points of confusion regarding this versatile round is its use in guns chambered in 5.56 NATO, and vice versa. Although the two rounds are externally identical, the 5.56 NATO round has a higher internal pressure and a longer neck. Because of this using a 5.56 NATO round in a rifle chambered specifically for .223 Remington can be disastrous. If your gun is chambered for .223 Remington, don’t use 5.56 NATO rounds in it without checking with the manufacturer. Conversely, you can use .223 Remington rounds in guns chambered in 5.56 NATO.
These particular .223 Remington rounds are 50 grain, making them lightweight for the cartridge size. At this weight these rounds are able to travel down-range at higher speeds and minimize felt recoil. These are Jacketed Hollow Point, or JHP, rounds and begin to expand immediately upon impact. As they expand they also slow down, creating a large wound cavity while preventing over-penetration. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 3325 feet per second and a muzzle energy of 1227 foot-pounds. This ammunition is great for hunting varmints and pests and can also be used for target practice.
There are 500 rounds in this single box of ammunition from Federal. With that much ammunition you can do some serious varmint hunting and still have enough left over to do some target practice. These are new production brass-cased rounds with boxer primer, so you can burn through the entire box, collect your spent casings, reload, and get back to the range. Federal has been manufacturing ammunition since 1922 and has a stellar reputation in the industry. Ammunition is manufactured at their longtime factory in Anoka, Minnesota. Order now, and feed your AR-15.
