.223 is an incredibly popular rifle caliber. Back when Gene Stoner produced the M-16 for the US Army, which was chambered for .222, he couldn’t have guessed that the Army’s later request for a round with longer range would result in such immense popularity. To fit the Army’s demand for a round capable of speeds over 1,000 feet per second past the 500 yard point, Stoner joined forces with firearms writer Robert Hutton, and the rest, as they say, is history. Now we have the .223, and rifle aficionados the world over love it.
In much the same way Stoner and Hutton created the .223 round, Federal has become known for excellence in ammunition. They’re under the massive worldwide umbrella of ATK Sporting, a company known not only for ammunition but also for such items as missile-defense systems. But at Federal, they stand on their own reputation, thanks to Charles Horn’s re-founding of the company in 1922. These Federal .223 55 grain FMJ rounds are just what your rifle ordered for target practice, tactical training, and plinking.
Following the spirit of the .223 round’s creation, these have an initial muzzle velocity of 3,240 feet per second, a 100-yard velocity of 2,874 feet per second, and 300-yard velocity of 2,222 feet per second. Their muzzle energy is also noteworthy for a target round at 1,282 foot-pounds, with a 100-yard energy of 1,008 foot-pounds. They leave your rifle quick and maintain speed exactly as they were designed to do with a nice medium weight of 55 grain.
