This 30-06 hunting cartridge by Federal Premium features the 165 grain Trophy Bonded Tip. Its accuracy is surgical. Its terminal ballistics are anything but!

The Trophy Bonded Tip’s polymer meplat equips it to neatly dissect its path through the air. Its boat tail works at the same time to reduce drag, thus enabling the bullet to follow a flat trajectory that doesn’t undergo transonic destabilization until approximately 1,100 yards. That said, the bullet is designed to undergo terminal expansion at velocities as low as 1,600 fps, which more or less limits the cartridge’s effective range to 680 yards. Still, not shabby!

The Trophy Bonded Tip’s solid copper shank is indeed bonded to its lead-alloy core. The components resist prying apart from each other during high-velocity penetration, which assures a deep enough wound channel to get the job done. Worse yet for the quarry, the Trophy Bonded Tip’s skived jacket promotes devastatingly wide expansion which does decidedly non-surgical things to any soft tissues that overlapped with its path.

Federal formulates this ammo’s propellant with copper-reducing additives to mitigate the fouling its bullet’s thick shank can deposit on a barrel’s rifling. Nickel-plated brass cases are the coup de grâce – they reduce friction to provide smoother feeding, and also possess enhanced protection against corrosion.
