- Q & A
.357 Magnum ammo was designed in 1934 in a collaborative effort by Phillip B. Sharpe, Colonel D.B. Wesson, and Elmer Keith. Although each man made a contribution, it was outdoorsman Elmer Keith who was most responsible for the success of the ammunition cartridge. With the creation of the .357 Magnum, the era of magnum rounds began, and considering the raw power and phenomenal force magnum rounds are capable of producing, it seems the gun world should be grateful to these men. Keith’s biggest contribution was the inclusion of the Keith bullet, which had a broad, flat meplat, allowing for fantastic energy transfer and greater expansion; although the final product had been altered, the basics remained, lending the .357 Magnum much of its power.
These particular .357 Magnum rounds are made by Federal. At 158 grain these are considered medium-weight rounds for the cartridge size, giving you the best of both worlds: light enough to travel at higher speeds, yet heavy enough to strike targets with a solid impact. These are Jacketed Hollow Point, or JHP, rounds and deliver rapid energy transfer on impact, also immediately beginning to expand. Their jackets help control expansion, slowing it to allow for greater penetration and a larger, more catastrophic wound cavity. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 1187 feet per second and muzzle energy of 494 foot-pounds. This ammunition is made for self-defense.
There are 20 defense rounds in this single box of ammunition from Federal. That’s just enough to keep your gun loaded and ready for personal protection; if you want to be truly prepared and spend time training, you’ll need to order more than one box. Defense rounds produce more felt recoil and muzzle rise than target rounds, and that means the only way you can be confident in your ability to make accurate shots is by practicing with them. Practice truly makes perfect when it comes to firearms; in the case of a self-defense situation, your body will revert to muscle memory, so make sure you’ve got everything down cold. Federal manufactures ammunition at their longtime factory in Anoka, Minnesota, according to exacting standards. To be prepared, order now.
