- Q & A
On April 11, 1986, a pair of serial bank robbers faced off with seasoned FBI agents in Miami, Florida. The firefight took place out in the open on a city street, and in the ensuing chaos, a number of things happened that would forever influence the gun world and law enforcement. When it was all over, two FBI agents were dead; one was Ben Grogan, a gifted sharpshooter whose glasses had broken during the firefight, effectively crippling him. And even though the murderous robbers had been shot multiple times apiece, they kept going for some time. It was that fact that made the F.B.I. decide they wanted better ammunition for their agents.
The result of the F.B.I.’s tests and studies was the creation of the .40 S&W, a round with practically identical drop, drift, and accuracy to the 9mm but greater stopping power. It’s a tough round, and one with a vast, dedicated following. Getting in range time with your .40 S&W is a must to improve your own accuracy and shot placement, and to do that you need some good target rounds. These rounds are made by Federal, a company with nearly 100 years in business and extensive experience. Federal uses only high quality components in their ammunition, and shooters using these target rounds praise their reliable functioning, fantastic performance, and accuracy.
These are fairly heavy rounds at 180 grain, making them a nice choice for target practice since they deliver more power than lighter rounds. They’re FMJ and don’t expand on impact but simply penetrate, creating through-and-through, and keep traveling. Each round flies down-range with nice speed at a muzzle velocity of 1000 feet per second and makes an impression with a muzzle energy of 400 foot-pounds. These are great rounds for target practice, shooting drills, and plinking, and because they’re also new-production brass cases with boxer primer, you can reload them. Federal manufactures their ammunition at their longtime plant in Anoka, Minnesota. Place your order today for this 500-round box and hit the range.
