- Q & A
The .45 GAP was designed in 2002 by Ernest Dunham, a Speer engineer who was asked by none other than Glock to create a cartridge with the .45 ACP’s power but with a stronger case head as well as a shorter length overall so it could fit in a smaller pistol. “GAP” actually stands for Glock Automatic Pistol and the .45 GAP, which first hit the market in 2003, was the first round to be associated with Glock on the commercial market. The .45 GAP is made for the full-size Glock 37, the compact Glock 38, and the sub-compact Glock 39. All those models have slightly narrower grips and shorter lengths overall than the Glock 21 and 30, which are chambered in .45 ACP.
These particular .45 GAP rounds are manufactured by Federal. At 230 grain these are fairly heavy rounds capable of striking targets with considerable force. They’re Full Metal Jacket, FMJ, rounds and as such do not expand on impact but simply strike the target, penetrate, and keep on going. Always be sure you have a reliable backstop in place during range time. Each of these rounds produces a muzzle velocity of 880 feet per second and muzzle energy of 395 foot-pounds. This ammunition is good for target practice, self-defense training, and plinking.
When you order this case of ammunition from Federal you get 20 boxes containing 50 rounds each for a total of 1000 target rounds. That’s a big box of ammo, and you can get some fantastic trigger time in with it. Of course, you’re going to burn through this box of ammo faster than you think, so you might consider ordering two. Just a thought. Because these rounds are produced in brand new brass cases with boxer primer, you can collect your spent casings, reload them, and get even more range time in. Federal manufactures this ammunition at their longtime factory in Anoka, Minnesota, according to high standards. Order now and keep your .45 GAP-chambered pistol well-fed with American-made rounds.
