- Q & A
The .38 Special has spent years of popularity with NYPD with many law enforcement officers continuing to carry it today. The first .38 Special was made in 1898, and more than a century later, its popularity remains. It will forever remain one of the most popular revolver calibers, and with its softer recoil and concealability, it’s easy to see why. Many law enforcement officers carry them in their off-duty time and an untold number of private citizens use them as their preferred conceal-carry handgun. And for self-defense, Hornady’s .38 Special +P 110 grain JHP (jacketed hollow point) ammunition should be your first choice, especially in a bulk 250 round package like this.
At a lightweight 110 grain, these rounds have a little quicker muzzle velocity at 1,090 feet per second. .38 Specials typically give their greatest performance in closer quarters, and these rounds have a muzzle energy of 290 foot-pounds at close range. One of their nicest features is the Flex Tip technology Hornady created to bypass the hollow point problem of clogged tips. Punching through layers takes work for any round, and for some hollow points, the material is prone to gathering in the hollow, causing expansion failures. Not so for Hornady’s ammo. A soft polymer insert does away with that problem and the JHP assists in control, giving this ammunition a fantastic, reliable expansion rate.
This JHP ammunition is ideal for self-defense. It’s a +P round, also known as overpressure ammunition, meaning it has a greater internal pressure than normal rounds of the same caliber. That extra pressure gives these rounds more punch and when you combine that with Hornady’s dedication and attention to detail, you’ve got a great round. Hornady designed this ammunition with low muzzle flash to preserve your night vision and silver nickel plating so the rounds are easier to see in the dark. All their ammunition is manufactured in Nebraska, so you know you’re getting American-made.
There is a practically endless stream of impressive features to this ammunition, including its clean burn and propellants created specifically to reduce recoil. Although this ammunition is specifically designed for self-defense, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put some rounds down-range for training’s sake. With 250 rounds in this box of ammunition, you can fit practice in and have enough left over for concealed carry.(This is +P ammunition. Please make sure your firearm is approved for +P before ordering. Most manufacturers do not recommend using +P ammo for repeated range use as the increased pressure can lead to additional wear and tear on your firearm and barrel).
