- Q & A
5.56 NATO has been around since the 1960s, and although it was first designed to fulfill the military’s needs for a new, more powerful rifle round, it didn’t take long to finds its way onto the commercial market. A large part of the thanks for its popularity goes to the AR, which was designed right about the same time and immediately began to build a dedicated following. 5.56 rounds are strong, capable rounds that can do everything from hunting to combat to target practice. If you have a gun chambered in 5.56 NATO, you’re probably looking to keep it fed.
At 55 grain these are rather lightweight rounds for the cartridge size. Being lighter means these rounds are able to travel down-range at higher speeds and have less felt recoil than their heavier counterparts. These are Full Metal Jacket, or FMJ, rounds and don’t expand on impact. Target rounds such as these are capable of traveling over a mile before coming to a natural stop, and since you can’t guarantee what the round may or may not strike along the way, make sure you have a backstop in place. Each of these rounds has a muzzle velocity of 3165 feet per second and a muzzle energy of 1223 foot-pounds. This ammunition is great for target practice, tactical training, and plinking.
When you order this box of ammunition from Independence you get 20 target rounds. That’s just enough to give your gun a taste of what this ammo can do, and just enough to get you going at the range. If you want to make sure your gun is well-fed and that you have plenty of ammo for your next trip to the range, order multiple boxes. After all, there’s no such thing as too much target practice or too much ammunition. This ammunition is produced by Independence, which is a subsidiary of ATK. All Independence ammunition is made with pride in the United States. Your AR has a big appetite, so feed it.
