- Q & A
What specializes this 38 Special ammunition for target shooting? Its low recoil is certainly a factor. The 148 grain projectile receives a muzzle velocity of 709 feet per second if it is fired through a 4” barrel. That means if you’re firing an S&W Model 64, which weighs 35.6 ounces unloaded, you will get a muzzle energy of 2.41 ft lbs. That is extremely gentle, so you’ll enjoy greater comfort and have an easier time keeping your sights trained on your target.
This is to say nothing about the cartridge’s bullet itself. The lead wadcutter is an economic bullet, and its cylindrical form means that it has a flat nose profile which sits flush with the case mouth. The wadcutter’s tip looks like the business end of a hole punch, and it behaves in much the same fashion when it collides with a paper target. If you want to group your shots close together and appreciate just how good a job you are doing of it, then the LWC will make you happy.
Magtech is a subsidiary of one of the world’s largest ammo producers – CBC Global – and their cartridges are universally brass-cased, Boxer-primed and reloadable. Note that wadcutter ammo may not feed reliably in a lever-action rifle. (This ammo certainly didn’t work in my Winchester Model 94, which is why all of it went into my S&W Model 64 instead.)
