Most of the guys we know who prefer 45 Glock Auto Pistol ammo for self-defense are cops (or retired cops). If that’s your case, then you already know Speer’s Gold Dot series is the good stuff – the law enforcement grade stuff – which provides the commanding terminal performance it takes to quickly subdue a threat.
This round’s 200 grain bullet is no ordinary jacketed hollow point. Its jacket is electrochemically bonded to its swaged lead core, so it’s uniformly thick to promote excellent rotational stability. It’s also exceedingly durable, so it barely sheds any of its weight as it plows through soft tissue at high velocities – the key to deep penetration.
The Gold Dot JHP’s nose cavity is carefully created through a sequence of die presses. The first stage controls how quickly the bullet can expand; the second, the width to which it can expand. That’s all to say you can count on this bullet to widen out inside the threat, even if said threat is shielded by clothing or an even tougher barrier.
Speer loads Gold Dot ammo in Idaho with sensitive Boxer primers, uniform propellant and nickel-plated brass cases. Nickel provides a tripartite advantage: added visibility in the chamber, reduced friction during feeding, and enhanced corrosion resistance. All in all, we doubt you’re going to find better 45 GAP ammo self-defense ammo than this – and not just because 45 GAP is becoming increasingly rare these days.

- Is 45 GAP the same as acp Posted On: 8/18/2020 By: Timothy Woody
- No sir, totally different! The 45 GAP is Glock's attempt at improving the 45 ACP, but its different dimensions make it incompatible with 45 ACP firearms. You pretty much only want 45 GAP if you also own a Glock 37 handgun.
