- Q & A
See this round’s projectile? It is the Power-Point, which has held the honor of being Winchester’s most popular hunting bullet for almost half a century. The Power-Point’s effective soft point design enables it to produce terminal expansion without the need for an expensive polymer tip. Its jacket is notched to promote wider expansion cross the 223’s entire effective range, and it is also concentric enough to guarantee satisfactory rotational stability.
This particular Power-Point’s heavier 64 grain weight does slow its muzzle velocity down to 3,020 fps, although its higher 0.262 G1 ballistic coefficient means that it will strike a 103-yard target with 1,000 ft lbs of kinetic energy and remain supersonic past 700 yards – way farther than you would probably attempt to aim with your AR or other 223 rifle.
This ammo was produced only for the commercial market, and as such features shiny polished brass cases. Once their noncorrosive Boxer primers are all used up, you can do good things to those cases at a reloading station.
