In 1954, 7.62x51mm NATO was created specifically for the US Army. It was originally intended for the M14 rifle and the M60 machine gun, and today it continues to be used in machine guns, by special operations forces, and by snipers. Sometimes it is confused with the .308 Win, and although they are extremely similar, they’re not identical. .308 Win cartridges are loaded to higher pressures than 7.62x51mm because they’re commonly used for long-distance, big game hunting. As a common military round, 7.62x51mm has been used in multiple wars including Vietnam, the Falklands, the Gulf War, and the Iraq War. Given the incredibly velocity and energy of this ammunition, it’s no surprise military snipers have stuck with this round for decades.
Of course, if this cartridge has an impressive military history, Winchester’s is legendary. Founded in 1866 by Oliver Winchester, they’ve enjoyed a string of successes, from the .44 Henry rimfire to the lever-action Gun that Won the West to, yes, the .308 Win. Today the Olin Corporation manufactures Winchester ammunition, and you’ll find every round meets the same strict standards and expectations the company was founded on almost 150 years ago.
These are 147 grain rounds, so they’re considered lightweight for this caliber. They have a muzzle velocity of 2,800 feet per second and a muzzle energy of 2,559 foot-pounds. As FMJ rounds they’re great for target practice and plinking due to their lack of expansion. There are 20 rounds in this box; that’s 20 chances to enjoy the legendary Winchester name and quality. For American-made .223 ammunition made with pride, look no further; this is the ammunition for you.
