We’re asked this question quite often: Does Winchester Silvertip 38 Special +P ammunition actually contain silver? Sadly, no. You will have to pay a handloader a lot of money for the custom ammunition you need to hunt werewolves. We wish you luck.

What this ammo actually excels at is personal protection. This is an overpressure cartridge, which propels its 125 grain projectile to a faster-than-standard muzzle velocity of 945 feet per second (assuming the firearm has a 4” barrel). The bullet will strike a target at close range with over 220 ft lbs of kinetic energy, which is higher than the bare minimum commonly recommended for self-defense.

A +P cartridge like this will generate additional recoil and produce steeper muzzle rise. It is also unsafe to fire this ammo in a 38 Special firearm unless it is specifically rated for +P. It is safe for all 357 Magnum firearms, however.

The Silvertip jacketed hollow point’s silver color is actually aluminum-alloy plating. It does not affect the bullet’s terminal performance – the jacketed hollow point would penetrate soft tissue and expand just as reliably even if it wasn't plated with aluminum. This self-defense ammo’s brass cases do benefit from their nickel plating, however. In addition to smoother feeding and extraction, nickel provides additional resistance against corrosion!
