Due to their smaller size and lighter weight, .38 Specials are immensely popular concealed carry firearms. In fact, one of the first pink handguns to come out for marketing to women was the Charter Arms Pink Lady, which is a .38 Special. They perform best in closer quarters, which also lends to their self-defense popularity, and there is a wide array of revolvers perfectly suited for concealment in ankle holsters and pocket holsters. The .38 Special has been around since 1898 and is sometimes confused with the .357 due to its exact same case size of 0.357”. But a .357 is packed to a higher pressure, making it important to use .38’s only in your .38 firearm.
Speaking of higher pressures, these particular Winchester rounds are +P; they were specifically designed to be a hotter round. This is done to create greater stopping power for defense rounds, and should not be confused with actual high pressure or proof rounds. +P rounds are loaded within SAAMI specifications, just with a higher pressure than your average round. These are also JHP with reliable expansion upon impact, which is ideal for self-defense carry.
These are at the light end of the weight spectrum at 125 grain, but that also means they move a bit faster. They have a muzzle velocity of 945 feet per second and a muzzle energy of 248 foot-pounds. All of Winchester’s ammunition is made in America; their headquarters are in Alton, Illinois, and they’ve been around for almost 150 years now. There are 50 rounds in this box, which gives you some to practice with; being comfortable with the ammunition you carry for personal protection is important. You can also order a box to stash in your safe so you have defense rounds available as needed. Either way, these Winchester +P rounds are a fantastic self-defense option for your .38 Special.
