The 5.56x45 was hardly designed to put ten bullets through one hole at 1,000 yards. But when Winchester loads a high-quality cartridge with a 77 grain match grade hollow point boat tail, the 5.56 can do some pretty impressive tricks!

This round’s bullet is a hefty fellow. That gives it the momentum it needs to resist getting blown off its intended trajectory by crosswinds, but it does call for a faster 1:7”, 1:8” or 1:9” barrel twist. The HPBT is the bullet of choice for snipers, as its low-drag jacket profile, long boat tail and narrow meplat all contribute to its high 0.346 G1/0.176 G1 ballistic coefficient. A concentric jacket and rearward situated uniform lead core also give the HPBT stellar rotational stability. Just don’t mistake the HPBT for a hunting bullet – that nose cavity does not make the bullet expand if it tunnels through a soft medium. (A bullet like this would cream any varmint’s corn pronto, though.)
