- Q & A
5.45x39 ammo was designed in 1974 for use in the Russian AK-74. It’s a rimless, bottlenecked rifle cartridge that was created as part of a collaborative effort by a team of Russian designers. This cartridge is seen as an example of the tendency towards lighter-weight rifle rounds for military use, but there is definitely logic to having lighter rifle rounds for service members. Since ammunition must be carried, often for unknown, lengthy distances, having it weigh less is not only useful keeping a soldier’s kit manageable but also allows for more ammo to be carried at lighter weights. This round was designed to tumble on impact for greater wounding potential and penetrates to greater depths than 5.56x45mm rounds.
These particular 5.45x39mm rounds are manufactured by Wolf, which is a subsidiary of the legendary Tula Arms plant. At 69 grain these are considered lightweight rounds overall but fall in the middle of the weight spectrum for the cartridge size. These are Full Metal Jacket, FMJ, rounds and do not expand on impact but simply strike the target, penetrate, and continue on their way. Rifle rounds like these can travel for miles before coming to a stop, making it doubly important to have a solid backstop in place. This ammunition is great for target practice, tactical training, and plinking.
There are 30 target rounds in this single box of Wolf ammunition. In order to save you money, Wolf produces these rounds using their own specialized bi-metal layering process, alternating copper and steel to create a steel case. Finished cases are berdan primed to ensure ignition and extend their shelf-life and coated with a polymer finish for consistent cycling. Wolf manufactures its ammunition at the Tula Arms Plant in Tula, Russia, which was founded in 1712 by order of Peter I, who felt a local weapons plant would help keep the locals armed for self-defense purposes against invading nomads. Place your order now and keep your AK-74 warm and well-fed with rounds from its home country.
