- Q & A
It’s an old and reasonably accurate axiom in the firearms world that you’re only going to perform half as well during a high-stress situation as you do on your best day at the range. With that in mind it’s more than slightly important to get in a serious amount of target practice and shooting drills. To do that you need a lot of ammunition, and although target rounds are most commonly used during training for many reasons, including cost, remember that defense ammunition doesn’t feel like target ammunition. Defense rounds are significantly more powerful because they’re designed to provide life-saving power when it matters most, so it stands to reason you should train with defense ammunition.
These are 124 grain defense rounds, putting them at the low end of medium-weight. They’re still light enough to reach incredible speeds but they’re also heavy enough to pack a better punch, both of which are important in a self-defense situation. As JHP’s they’re capable of significant energy transfer on impact and begin to expand and decelerate immediately upon impact. The controlled expansion you get with a Jacketed Hollow Point creates a deeper wound channel than the average HP round does, and that translates to better stopping power. A gaping, devastatingly deep wound should convince just about anyone to stop what they’re doing. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 1100 feet per second and muzzle energy of 333 foot-pounds.
These defense rounds are made by Fiocchi, a company that was founded in 1876 by Giulio Fiocchi. When Giulio started the business he couldn’t have imagined the lengths to which Fiocchi would flourish; after almost 150 years in business they have a deserved reputation for excellence and a global reach. Fiocchi’s headquarters are in Lecco, Italy, but they have a plant in Ozark, Missouri, for U.S. distribution. There are 1000 defense rounds in this case. That’s enough to get some focused training time in, honing shot placement and practicing drawing and firing from various positions. And because these rounds have new production brass cases with boxer primer, they can be reloaded. Get in the range time you need to perform at such a high level half of your best is still an impressive performance.
