It came into being following the 1986 FBI Miami Shootout during which serial bank robbers engaged FBI agents in a gunfight in the streets of Miami, killing two of the agents and wounding the others. Assessing the devastation after the fact the FBI decided they needed to put more powerful ammunition in the hands of their agents, only they didn’t want the rounds to have the bigger recoil of 10mm and .45 ACP rounds. Thus the .40 S&W was born.
