- Q & A
In the 1950’s, the US Army started using 5.56x45 NATO rounds for its infantry as a solution to the control issues with their old M14 rifles, which were chambered for 7.62x51. That was right before the .223 became popular in the military and made its way into the civilian sector in the 1960’s, and ever since, the differences between 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington have been the cause of some discussion among rifle fans. While the dimensions of the brass cases the rounds come in are identical, the pressure inside and chamber lead length differs. 5.56 NATO is packed to a higher pressure and, therefore, should not be used in .223 Remington chambers.
These Federal 5.56x45 NATO 55 grain FMJ-BT (full metal jacket – boat-tail) rounds are made to suit the needs of shooters needing target practice and plinking time. But, more than that, their boat tail shape is designed to improve longer-range shots, providing a steadier trajectory and better cross-wind resistance. 55 grain is a medium-weight round, and these still move along nicely, leaving your muzzle at a velocity of 3,250 feet per second. They’ll make a solid hole in your target, too, with a muzzle energy of 1,289 foot-pounds.
Since 1922, when Charles Horn took over Federal, their ammunition has been American made in Anoka, Minnesota. Every component of these rounds is made right there in the same plant where Horn designed his first product and won his first military supply contract. They still have the same standards that once won them an Army-Navy “E” for excellence award, too. And because Federal believes in offering their customers the greatest value possible, they use fresh brass and boxer primer, so you can reload. There are 90 rounds in this box of ammunition, complete with clips so you can reload fast. Order now to sharpen your rifle skills without delay.
(This ammunition is 5.56x45 NATO, meaning it has a higher internal pressure than .223 Remington rounds. Due to its higher pressure, 5.56x45 NATO is not meant to be fire from .223 chambered rifles.)
