- Q & A
The .357 Magnum was created in 1934 as the result of a group effort among renowned outdoorsman Elmer Keith, Phillip B. Sharpe, and Colonel D.B. Wesson of Smith and Wesson fame. Although it was technically created as the results of efforts by all three men it was Elmer Keith who deserves the lion’s share of thanks for the creation of this round, which was the start of the Magnum round line overall. Keith’s greatest contribution, aside from meticulous handloading, was his Keith Bullet, which had a flat meplat for greater energy transfer and expansion. Some changes were made to the final product, but the gist remained, and the .357 Magnum is even more popular today than it was decades ago.
These particular .357 Magnum rounds are made by Speer. Each round weighs in at 125 grain, making them pretty lightweight for the cartridge size. Being lightweight means these rounds can travel down-range at higher speeds and also helps to keep felt recoil manageable. These are Jacketed Hollow Point, JHP, rounds and begin to expand immediately upon impact. Thanks to their jackets expansion is controlled which allows for greater penetration than standard HPs, meaning a deeper, more devastating wound cavity. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 1450 feet per second and muzzle energy of 548 foot-pounds. This ammunition is designed for self-defense use.
When you order this case of ammunition from Speer you get 20 boxes containing 50 rounds each for a total of 1000 defense rounds. With 1000 rounds you can keep your gun and spare magazines or speedloaders loaded and ready for self-defense and still have plenty left over for training. Remember, defense rounds produce more recoil and muzzle rise than target rounds, making accuracy harder to manage. Only training with your chosen defense rounds ensures accuracy and placement. Because these are +P rounds they produce more power than other defense rounds of this caliber. Speer manufactures these rounds at their factory in Lewiston, Idaho. Place your order now and prepare to train like you may one day be forced to fight for your life or the lives of your loved ones.
These are +P rounds and should only be used in guns designed for +P rounds.
