- Q & A
When Joyce Hornady founded Hornady more than sixty years ago he did it with the desire of creating precision manufactured rounds with superior performance and top-tier quality. Joyce was an avid shooter, in fact, he was a marksmanship instructor for the military during World War II, but the ammunition available at the time didn’t meet his standards, so he decided to make his own. The resulting products are widely respected among shooters nationwide today, and among the frontrunners of Hornady’s impressive line is their defense ammunition, like these JHP rounds.
JHP’s have an edge over the average hollow point. They deliver impressive energy transfer on impact and begin to expand instantly, but their jackets increase their strength, allowing for more controlled expansion and deeper penetration. And since these are 240 grain, they’re relatively heavy overall although fairly light for a .44 Magnum; their weight increases their impact power. The .44 Magnum is what you might call a compelling round, capable of causing incredibly damage, and these self-defense rounds are a fine example. This ammunition has impressive speed with a muzzle velocity of 1,350 feet per second and stunning power with a muzzle energy of 971 foot-pounds.
Hornady manufactures all of their ammunition at their established plant in Grand Island, Nebraska. These defense rounds are designed to meet their stringent standards; Hornady takes self-defense seriously, and the quality of their ammunition reflects that. There are 20 rounds in this box, so you can keep your carry weapon loaded for personal protection and also fire a few to get a feel for their stronger recoil. And since Hornady makes these in new production brass cases using boxer primer, you can reload them. They’re also non-corrosive, which is easier on your gun’s barrel. If you want a defense round from a company trusted by members of law enforcement, you want Hornady.
