- Q & A
The Gold Dot is the original bonded core jacketed hollow point handgun bullet. Speer’s Uni-Cor process electrochemically fuses solid copper to an alloyed lead core one atom at a time, thus creating a jacket that is rotationally stable and durable. When Speer put this ammo to the FBI’s own test for bullet efficacy, the Gold Dot bullet lost only 0.1 grain of its total weight before it penetrated bare ballistic gel to a depth of 12.19” and expanded by over 50% in diameter. When the bullet had to penetrate heavy fabric before sinking into ballistic gelatin, it retained all of its weight and expanded over 75% in diameter!
The Gold Dot bullet’s reliable terminal expansion is the work of its hollow point nose cavity, which is created via a series of die presses that controls both the rate at which it can expand and the width it can expand to. The Gold Dot’s nose profile is finally smoothed out to ensure reliable feeding in a semi-automatic, and voila – an outstanding .40 cal solution for personal protection.
This ammunition features highly standardized propellant charges and sensitive Boxer primers. Its nickel-plated brass cases aren’t just pretty; nickel enhances performance by smoothing out feeding and extraction, combating corrosion, and providing a luster that facilitates chamber checks in low-light environments.
