It’s been more than 100 years since the .38 Special was created, and in that time it has become the centerfire handgun cartridge with the most factory loads on the market. And unlike the early days when it was a revolver-only cartridge, today there are also a few semi-auto’s and carbines that take it. It is frequently used for personal protection, but there are also those who enjoy it for a day of plinking or punching holes through paper. Whatever your reason is for owning one of these popular pistols, these CCI .38 Special 158 grain LRN rounds are good quality and reasonably priced, offering you plenty of time to sharpen your skills.
One unique attribute of this ammunition is that they’re LRN, or Lead Round Nose. There are actually several positive results of using LRN ammunition: first, the weight of the lead drastically improves ballistic coefficiency. And because they’re both rounded and lead, they deform upon impact; not as much as a hollow point, but to a greater degree than FMJ rounds. And, of course, they’re more cost-effective than many others while also being more accurate. To save you even more money they’re berdan-primed, aluminum-cased rounds.
CCI ammunition is made in Lewiston, Idaho, near the Snake River. The company has been around for more than 60 years and was founded by Dick Speer, and they have always adhered to a high standard for their entire manufacturing process. These are medium-weight 158 grain rounds with a muzzle velocity of 755 feet per second and muzzle energy of 200 foot-pounds. This 1,000-round box is for serious shooters and is suited for target practice and plinking. If you use your .38 Special for self-defense, you need to make sure your aim and grouping are up to the task, and if you use it for fun, well, this box will give you lots of fun!
(These are Lead Round Nose rounds. Some ranges have restrictions on lead and therefore do not allow them due to their composition. Please check before using this particular ammunition at your local range.)
