- Q & A
Skeet shooting has been around since the 1920’s, when it was created by a grouse hunter by the name of Charles Davis. Davis named it Clock Shooting because the course he’d come up with was similar to a clock: it was a circle with a 25-yard radius and a trap at the 12 o’clock position. At the time participants fired in all directions, but they were forced to stop when a chicken farm was opened next to the Davis farm. To remedy that problem in 1923, shooter William Foster added a 6 o’clock position and cut the course in half. It was Foster who worked to make it a national sport as well; the name changed to skeet shooting after a magazine competition took place. The winning submission of skeet was derived from “skyte” the Norwegian word for “shoot.”
Today skeet shooting is quite popular, and if you’re going to participate, you need the right ammunition. These 12 gauge rounds have a 1 1/8 ounce load which is considered the sweet spot of power by many skeet shooters, because it delivers fantastic power without the greater felt recoil of a 1 ¼ ounce load. Each shell is 2 ¾” long and filled with #8 lead shot which is a great size for breaking clay. Each round leaves the barrel of your shotgun with a muzzle velocity of 1145 feet per second and delivers more than enough energy to shatter clays; you bring the shot placement and these Federal rounds bring the power. This ammunition is made specifically for target shooting such as skeet, target, and clay.
