- Q & A
The 1986 FBI Miami Shootout played an integral role in the creation of the .40 S&W. During the firefight almost three decades ago a pair of serial bank robbers engaged a group of FBI agents in a fierce shootout right in the streets of Miami, and the outcome was far from what might have been expected. Despite being repeatedly shot the robbers kept on fighting, and because they were able to keep fighting they were also able to murder two of the agents. When the proverbial dust settled and both the robbers and two agents were dead, the FBI decided it was time for a more powerful pistol round, and after four years of research and work, the .40 S&W was created.
These .40 S&W rounds weigh in at 155 grain, making them medium-weight for the cartridge size. At this weight they’re light enough to travel at higher speeds but heavy enough to impact targets with substantial force. These are Jacketed Hollow Point, or JHP, rounds and begin to expand immediately upon impact. Their jackets control expansion, allowing for greater penetration than standard HPs and creating a bigger, more catastrophic wound cavity. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 1140 feet per second and a muzzle energy of 445 foot-pounds. This ammunition is meant for self-defense.
When you order this case of Federal ammunition you get 1000 rounds. If that seems like a large amount of defense rounds, it really isn’t. Defense rounds produce more felt recoil and greater muzzle rise than target rounds, meaning the only way to ensure accuracy and shot placement is through practice. Someday your life could depend on whether or not you practiced with defense rounds, so isn’t it worth training realistically? Federal manufactures ammunition at their established factory in Anoka, Minnesota. Order now and train like you may one day need to fight.
