- Q & A
By ammunition standards the .40 S&W is a young cartridge. It was created following the 1986 FBI Miami Shootout, a firefight that involved a pair of serial bank robbers taking on a team of FBI agents right in the streets of Miami. Although the robbers were wounded early on, they continued to fight, wounding the agents systematically. Before they succumbed to their wounds they’d wounded all the agents and murdered two of them. One of the deceased agents, Ben Grogan, had been a sharpshooter; after losing his glasses in the firefight he could not see at all and was quickly killed. The FBI decided they needed a better round, and after four years of research, the .40 S&W was created.
These particular .40 S&W rounds are made by Federal. At 165 grain these are relatively heavy rounds, meaning they’re powerful enough to impact targets with impressive force. These are Jacketed Hollow Point, or JHP, rounds and begin to expand at the moment of impact. Their jackets control expansion, allowing the bullets to penetrate more deeply, creating a devastating wound cavity. These rounds have a muzzle velocity of 980 feet per second and a muzzle energy of 352 foot-pounds. This ammunition is designed by Federal specifically for self-defense use.
When you order this single box of ammunition from Federal you get 50 defense rounds. These boxes are a good size for stashing in your range bag or stacking in your gun safe for later use. 50 rounds are just enough to keep your gun and spare magazines loaded and ready for personal protection. Keep in mind that defense rounds produce more felt recoil and muzzle rise than target rounds, which means the only way to be sure of your accuracy with these rounds is through practice. Order one box to keep your gun ready; order two or more to get the training in that might one day save your life. Federal manufactures ammunition at their longtime factory in Anoka, Minnesota. Order now, and prepare to defend yourself.
