- Q & A
On April 11, 1986, serial bank robbers William Matix and Michael Platt engaged eight FBI agents in a firefight in the middle of the street in Miami, Florida. Despite the fact that the FBI agents outnumbered the robbers 4 to 1, they found themselves outgunned, and before the fight ended two agents had been killed. One agent, Ben Grogan, was a talented marksman, and his death in particular shocked the law enforcement community. Today it’s known as the 1986 FBI Miami Shootout and it’s been studied endlessly both in law enforcement and firearms industry circles. There were policy changes and new tactical methods adopted as a result, but one particular result of the shootout affected the gun world at large: the creation of the .40 S&W in 1990.
The .40 S&W is the sweet spot of the ammunition world. It harnesses the greater stopping power of its parent cartridge, the 10mm, with less felt recoil and with almost identical accuracy, drift, and drop to the 9mm. It’s a fantastic round and popular for self-defense. If you use your .40 S&W for personal protection this ammunition is for you. It’s manufactured by Federal at their longtime plant in Anoka, Minnesota, where all ammunition is tested extensively and must pass strict quality control measures. Federal’s been making ammunition for almost a century so it comes as no surprise these defense rounds are so high quality.
At 180 grain these are considered heavyweights for the .40 S&W. They’re JHPs and deliver rapid energy transfer and carefully controlled expansion on impact; the jackets allow them to penetrate more deeply than standard HPs do, so they create a larger, more devastating wound cavity. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 1010 feet per second and muzzle energy of 408 foot-pounds. Federal produces these in fresh brass cases with boxer primer, so they can be reloaded, making this an even better deal. There are 50 defense rounds in the box. If you’re serious about self-defense, you want serious defense rounds, and with Federal Tactical Law Enforcement, that’s what you get.
