- Q & A
When it comes to self-defense there are many factors to consider. Obviously it’s a must to have appropriate training both in safety and marksmanship, but there’s more to it than that. You also need to consider what caliber and model of gun you’re going to carry, how you’ll carry it, and, of course, whether you’re truly capable of using it. Once you’ve covered those bases, there’s still something left: ammunition. Target rounds are just that: for targets. They don’t expand on impact and are notorious for creating through-and-throughs, meaning they could penetrate and hit an innocent bystander. Defense rounds expand on impact while simultaneously decelerating, so they both create a deeper, more devastating wound and slow down, which prevents over-penetration.
These defense rounds are made by Aguila, a company with a history that stretches back to 1961. Aguila is a subsidiary of TECNOS, a company based in Mexico. TECNOS was originally started by Remington, and, in fact, Remington trained the first TECNOS employees. After the first few years Remington left the factory and no longer has anything to do with it. TECNOS is known for producing competitively priced ammunition and distributing it globally, and thanks to their Remington roots they’re well versed in what it takes to produce quality products.
At 117 grain these 9mm rounds are lightweight. Being lighter enables them to reach higher speeds, but they do still retain enough weight to make a decent mark on impact. These are Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) rounds: their jackets control expansion, allowing them to penetrate more deeply than standard HPs and create a larger, more devastating wound cavity. Each round has a muzzle velocity of 1155 feet per second. This ammunition is designed for self-defense. There are 50 defense rounds in the box which is just right for keeping your gun and spare mags loaded and ready for personal protection. Place your order now to be truly prepared.
Ran great in my CM9on 2/10/2018
I was unfamiliar with the brand when I picked up a box of Aguila 117 gr JHP on sale from a LGS. I figured, "What the heck, I can give a try." It sat on the back of the shelf for a long time while I shot other stuff. I saw it the other day and decided to shoot later at the range.
I was very surprised by how well it ran in my Kahr CM9, which can be ammo sensitive. Not only did it run well but it was easily the most accurate ammo for me in that pistol. Normally I shoot Federal 124gr HST or occasional Golden Sabre 124gr for defense loads but the my group was much tighter using the Aguila.
Occasionally sparks flash out the muzzle when shooting but it doesn't bother me. The only thing I have trouble with is finding some of this for sale.
