- Q & A
The .357 Magnum came out in 1934 as the result of a collaborative effort between outdoorsman Elmer Keith, Phillip B. Sharpe, and Colonel D.B. Wesson, as in Smith & Wesson. Although all three men put work into the new cartridge it was Elmer Keith whose efforts truly had the greatest impact. In addition to extensive work handloading, Keith includes his own Keith bullet which features a broad, flat meplat for greater energy transfer and dramatic expansion. Although some changes were made in the long run the basics remain; without the .357 Magnum the entire line of magnum cartridges might not exist at all.
These particular .357 Magnum rounds are manufactured by the centuries-old Remington company. These rounds weigh in at 158 grain which makes them medium-weight for the cartridge size. That gives them the best of both worlds because they’re still light enough to race towards targets at higher speeds but heavy enough to impact targets with compelling force. These are JHP, Jacketed Hollow Point, rounds and begin to expand on impact. The jacket controls expansion, slowing it to allow for greater penetration and a deeper, devastating wound cavity. This ammunition is meant for self-defense use.
When you order this box of ammunition from Remington you get 500 defense rounds. That might seem like quite a few defense rounds but you’ll actually burn through them fairly quickly. Defense rounds produce more felt recoil and muzzle rise than target rounds which means the only way to ensure accuracy is by training with them. Far too many gun owners don’t train with defense rounds. Each of these rounds produces a muzzle velocity of 1235 feet per second and muzzle energy of 535 foot-pounds. Remington manufactures ammunition at their factory in Lonoke, Arkansas. Self-defense is serious business, so take it seriously. Order now and train like you may one day need to fight.
