- Q & A
The .357 Magnum was created in a group effort between Philip B. Sharpe, outdoorsman Elmer Keith, and Colonel D.B. Wesson, but the lion’s share of its creation took place thanks to the efforts of Elmer Keith. One of Keith’s greatest contributions, aside from extensive careful handloading, was the inclusion of the Keith bullet. The Keith bullet had a broad, flat meplat for greater energy transfer, more uniform expansion, and a bigger hole, and although the final round was altered a bit, the basics remained. The .357 Magnum launched Magnum cartridges in general and remains popular after more than 80 years of service.
These particular .357 Magnum rounds are manufactured by Remington. They weigh in at 158 grain, making them medium-weight for the cartridge size. That means you get the best of both worlds: these rounds are light enough to travel at higher speeds than their heavier counterparts but still heavy enough to strike targets with a solid impact. These are SP, Soft Point, rounds and expand on impact, mushrooming more slowly than HPs and creating a deeper wound cavity. Each round produces a muzzle velocity of 1235 feet per second and muzzle energy of 535 foot-pounds. This ammunition is designed for self-defense use.
There are 50 defense rounds in this single box of Remington ammunition. That’s enough to keep your gun and speedloaders or spare magazines loaded and ready. Keep in mind that defense rounds produce more felt recoil and muzzle rise than target rounds, meaning you’ll need to train with these rounds to ensure accuracy. These rounds are produced in virgin brass cases with boxer primer and can be reloaded. Remington manufactures ammunition at their factory in Lonoke, Arkansas, according to high standards.
