- Q & A
7.62x39mm was first made in 1944 for the RPD but is best known for its use in the SKS and AK-47. It’s an intermediate rifle cartridge and actually came about because the Soviet Union decided they wanted a new cartridge for their infantry. In 1943 the Technical Council of the People’s Commissariat for Armaments gathered to discuss the need for a new caliber for their military and the task of creating a versatile cartridge fell on a committee made up of NM Elizarov, PV Ryazanov, BV Semin, and IT Melnikov. After significant testing and a competition between 8 cartridges, the 7.62x39mm finally emerged as their top choice.
These particular 7.62x39mm rounds are manufactured by Tula. Each round weighs in at 122 grain which makes these fairly lightweight rounds for the cartridge size. Being lighter allows them to travel down-range at higher speeds than their heavier counterparts and also helps keep felt recoil manageable. These are FMJ, Full Metal Jacket, rounds and do not expand on impact. In fact, target rounds such as these are prone to over-penetration making it doubly important you have a reliable backstop in place during range time. This ammunition is meant for target practice and plinking.
When you order this case of ammunition from Tula you get 1000 target rounds. That’s a seriously big box of ammo and will keep you and your rifle going for some time. In order to save you money Tula produces this ammunition in steel cases, using berdan primer to ensure ignition and extend shelf life. Tula has been in business for centuries and has produced everything from swords to guns to ammo. Ammunition is manufactured at their factory in Tula, Russia according to SAAMI or CIP specifications. Order now to keep your Russian rifle fed with Russian ammo.
